Minor-attracted Persons
Minor-attracted persons (MAPs) are individuals whose sexual and romantic orientations often draw them to underage people. Minor-attraction is an orientation which is not chosen and often makes itself known during adolescence. MAPs are not universally defined by their attractions anymore than others are but others often fail to see the person behind the attraction. These individuals are often left to navigate their growing attractions alone which can lead to isolation, negative self-talk and many associated mental health challenges (ie. Depression, suicidal ideation and anxiety).
Minor-attracted persons (MAPs) are often misunderstood and are victims of misinformation and discrimination. It is often assumed that they are dangerous or that they cannot be trusted. Many people, including trained counselors, are frightened by the thoughts which MAPs share with them and are unwilling or unable to offer them the support which they are so eager to find.
At Welcome Connections, I will provide a safe and private space where we can explore your thoughts and experiences. We will identify strategies which will help you to address stigma, barriers to building a meaningful life and help you to find meaningful connections in the community.
In my work with minor-attracted persons, I will help you to address your general mental wellness, recognize your humanity and support you in meeting your individual and social needs in a safe and meaningful way. If you are looking for help in this area I encourage you to contact me to discuss my personal and professional philosophies on working with MAPs as well as the professional boundaries of confidentiality which I recognize can make seeking support so challenging.
